Collaborating to battle ORC in Michigan

Far from being a stand alone offense, the intricate web of organized retail crime (ORC) is invariably connected to more sinister activities and has significant impact on businesses and communities. In this episode, Michigan Assistant Attorney General Eric Sterbis emphasizes the importance of collaboration and proactive measures in combating rising ORC.

ORC’s far-reaching implications

The broader implications of ORC, extending beyond mere theft to fueling other criminal activities like weapons offenses and drug trafficking reinforce the urgency of tackling ORC and its ripple effects on public safety and economic stability.

Forming the dream team

In an innovative approach meant to form a sort of prosecutorial dream team, the Michigan AG’s office created the ‘FORCE Team’, a specialized unit comprised of dedicated assistant attorney generals, FBI special agents, Michigan State Police troopers, and other experts, all working together to address ORC. This integrated approach, with members physically co-located, has facilitated seamless collaboration and swift action, setting a precedent for effective law enforcement strategies nationwide.

Crucially, Michigan has also focused on breaking down silos between law enforcement agencies and retailers. By fostering direct communication channels and building trust, the Force team has been able to leverage retailers' insights and surveillance data to initiate investigations and prosecute offenders effectively.

Optimism for the Future

Looking ahead, there is optimism about the FORCE Team's impact, with notable successes in prosecuting offenders and initiating large-scale investigations within the short span since their formation. However, the need for continuous education and partnership-building efforts to sustain momentum and address evolving challenges effectively remains.
